چکیده

This paper presents a geometric characterization of geographic objects with vague boundaries. Since the framework is based on ordering geometry and does not rely on numerical concepts, it can be applied to qualitative spatial reasoning. The characterization describes vague regions and gradual transitions between two vague regions. This approach takes into account that the region of all points that definitely belong to an object is also vague, called higher-order vagueness. Higher-order vagueness is usually neglected by theories modeling spatial vagueness. The approach distinguishes firstand second-order vague regions and characterizes the gradual transitions of second-order vague regions. These gradual transitions allow transitions within transitions. In general, it is not possible to reduce higher-order vagueness to first-order vagueness. Using a spatial ordering structure the article shows when second-order vagueness is useful and examines the relationship between firstand second-order vagueness. An example shows how second-order vagueness can be used to represent geographic objects.

Spatial Vagueness

This chapter explores the phenomenon of vagueness as it relates to spatial information. It will be seen that many semantic subtleties and representational difficulties arise when spatial information is affected by vagueness. Moreover, since vagueness is particularly pervasive in spatial terminology, these problems have a significant bearing on the development of computational systems to provide...

A Mereological Approach to Representing Spatial Vagueness*

Spatial reasoning is crucial in many AI application domains, such as robotics, qualitative and naive physics, and some types of planning . Qualitative reasoning is often required ; and in many of these cases, uncertainty or imprecision about the spatial extent of particular entities has to be represented and coped with . This paper develops an axiomatisation of a relation of `crisping' (reducin...

New Design Approach to Handle Spatial Vagueness in Spatial OLAP Datacubes: Application to Agri-environmental Data

Spatial-OLAP (SOLAP) technologies are dedicated to multidimensional analysis of large volumes of (spatial) data. Spatial data are subject to different types of uncertainty, in particular spatial vagueness. Although several researches propose new models to cope with spatial vagueness, their integration in SOLAP systems is still in an embryonic state. Also, analyzing multidimensional data with me...

Bridging the Gap between Language and Action

When communicating with animated agents in a virtual space through natural language dialogue, it is necessary to deal with vagueness of language. To deal with vagueness, in particular vagueness of spatial relation, this paper proposes a new representation of locations. The representation is designed to have bilateral character, symbolic and numeric, in order to bridge the gap between the symbol...

Narrative Vagueness in Grass’s The Tin Drum: A Text-Centric Model of Narration to Reveal Dialogized Heteroglossia

The present study sets out to investigate the narrator’s textual position in Grass’s The Tin Drum. Although authorial self-dramatization through affinities with one or more characters in the work is undeniable, this study mainly concentrates on the inner interpenetrations of heteroglot utterances as uttered by an unreliable first-person narrator, Oskar Matzerath, in the light of the Bakhtinian ...
